Moles: Frequently Asked Questions

Q

Why do moles form?

A

Moles are formed by clusters of melanocytes—cells that produce melanin. Some are present at birth, while others develop later in life; factors such as ultraviolet (UV) rays, skin irritation, and hormonal influences are believed to play a role. Since the way moles form varies from person to person, it is not possible to determine the cause based on appearance alone.

Q

What are the different types of moles?

A

Moles include simple naevi, which are usually flat and measure about 1 to 2 mm, and melanocytic nevi, which can range from flat to raised. Their color also varies from light brown to black. Since it is impossible to determine the type based on appearance alone—and because there are other lesions that may look like moles—it is important to have any concerning changes examined by a doctor.

Q

How does YAYOI CLINIC determine the treatment method for moles?

A

We select a treatment method based on the type and size of the mole, as well as your skin type and preferences. At YAYOI CLINIC, a counselor will first listen to your concerns, and then a doctor will examine the mole. We’ll also assess your skin condition using the VISIA skin analysis system to determine whether a CO₂ (carbon dioxide) laser is appropriate, and then propose a treatment plan.

Q

Can moles be removed without using a scalpel?

A

At YAYOI CLINIC, we primarily use a scalpel-free CO₂ (carbon dioxide) laser to treat moles. This method uses heat generated by the laser’s reaction with the skin’s moisture to ablate the area containing the mole. However, not all moles are suitable for laser treatment. A doctor will determine during the consultation whether treatment is appropriate.

Q

Does laser mole removal hurt?

A

You may experience some pain during CO₂ (carbon dioxide) laser mole removal. At YAYOI CLINIC, we take pain management seriously by administering anesthesia in advance, depending on the condition of the treatment area. Since pain sensitivity varies from person to person, please let us know during your consultation if you are concerned about pain.

Q

How long is the downtime after mole removal?

A

After mole removal using a CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser, redness or bruising may occur for a few days. Additionally, a temporary indentation may form at the removal site; it typically takes 2 to 3 months for the indentation to become less noticeable. The healing process varies depending on the size and depth of the mole, as well as the condition of the skin.

Q

Will there be a scar after I have a mole removed?

A

Scars from mole removal may not disappear completely. With a CO₂ (carbon dioxide) laser, a slight indentation may form at the treated site, but it will become less noticeable over time. However, redness and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation may occur. Since excessive rubbing or scratching can lead to scarring, it is important to follow your doctor’s care instructions.

Q

How should I care for the area after having a mole removed?

A

After CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser treatment at YAYOI CLINIC, ointment is applied to the treated area and protected with tape. The tape should remain in place for approximately 2 weeks, and you must take precautions to avoid sun exposure on the treated area for about 3 months afterward. If the tape comes off, reapply the ointment and replace the tape. Please follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the specific duration and method.

Q

If a mole might be skin cancer, can it be removed with a laser?

A

If malignancy is suspected, laser treatment cannot be performed, and insurance-covered treatment and detailed examinations at a dermatology clinic are required. Even if it looks like a mole, there is a possibility it could be malignant melanoma; therefore, at YAYOI CLINIC, we assess the condition through a medical interview and visual examination before removal.

Q

What is the difference between laser removal and surgical excision of moles?

A

Laser removal of moles involves using a CO₂ (carbon dioxide) laser to ablate the lesion, while surgical excision involves cutting out the skin with a scalpel and suturing the incision. At YAYOI CLINIC, we primarily use lasers, but the most appropriate method varies depending on the size, depth, and location of the mole. Please consult with a doctor before treatment to discuss the best approach.
