FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Spot Removal
How do you choose a treatment for dark spots?
The choice of treatment for dark spots depends on the type of spot, your skin condition, and your desired results. At YAYOI CLINIC, we use VISIA skin analysis to identify existing dark spots and hidden pigmentation, and we’ll ask whether you’d like to remove prominent spots or even out the overall skin tone. Based on this, we’ll recommend the most suitable treatment, such as laser therapy or IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy.
How many types of spot removal lasers are available?
There are three main types of medical lasers used for removing skin spots: the Q-switched ruby laser, the Q-switched YAG laser, and the picosecond laser. The wavelength, treatment duration, and types of skin spots they are effective against vary depending on the type of laser. At YAYOI CLINIC, we offer the Q-switched ruby laser and the Q-switched YAG laser using the TriBeam Premium system.
How many sessions are needed for spot removal?
The number of treatments required to remove dark spots varies depending on the depth and extent of the spots, as well as the equipment used. At YAYOI CLINIC, while a single session of Q-switched ruby laser treatment may be sufficient for dark spots, IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment using the Cerec V typically requires multiple sessions. You can discuss the expected number of sessions during your consultation.
How long is the downtime for spot removal?
Downtime for spot removal varies depending on the device used. After Q-switched ruby laser treatment, the area will go from redness to scabbing, and it typically takes 1 to 2 weeks for the scabs to fall off naturally. It may take about 6 months for the redness and discoloration in the treated area to subside and become less noticeable. If you have upcoming plans, please discuss your recovery timeline during your consultation.
Is it possible for the skin to appear darker after a spot-removal treatment?
After a spot-removal treatment, the treated area may temporarily appear darker. This is because post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can occur following laser treatment. With the Q-switched ruby laser, this may appear approximately 2 weeks to 1 month after treatment, and it is a different type of discoloration from the original spot. At YAYOI CLINIC, we monitor your progress and, depending on the severity of the hyperpigmentation, may recommend topical treatments such as hydroquinone cream.
Do I need to prepare my skin before a laser treatment for dark spots?
Depending on your skin condition, preparation may be necessary before undergoing laser treatment for dark spots. At YAYOI CLINIC, we use VISIA to assess your skin condition and provide guidance on the care required for laser treatment. Depending on your skin condition, it may be advisable to allow 2 to 3 months for preparation. We can discuss a treatment plan during your consultation, including oral medications and doctor-recommended skincare products.
When should I go for a follow-up visit after laser treatment for dark spots?
At YAYOI CLINIC, follow-up visits after Q-switched ruby laser treatment are scheduled for 2 weeks and 1 month after the procedure. We will check the skin’s color and the status of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation following the procedure and provide guidance on protective measures and topical medications as needed. It is important to attend your follow-up appointments on the scheduled dates to ensure you continue your post-treatment care properly.
Can I undergo skin lightening treatment while pregnant?
As a general rule, YAYOI CLINIC does not perform skin-lightening treatments during pregnancy. However, we are available to consult with you regarding skincare routines you can follow while pregnant. If you are interested in a treatment, please inform us that you are pregnant so we can determine which care options are suitable for your current skin condition.
How long should I keep the protective tape on after laser treatment for dark spots?
As a general guideline, you should keep the protective patch on for about 1 to 2 weeks after Q-switched ruby laser treatment. Use petroleum jelly as needed, and do not forcefully remove any scabs. After removing the patch, we will provide guidance on topical care based on the condition of your post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. For more details, please see the Q-switched ruby laser treatment page.
How much does skin spot removal cost at YAYOI CLINIC?
The cost of spot removal varies depending on the treatment method and the treatment area. The standard rate for the Q-switched ruby laser is 1,500 yen per shot plus a 10,000 yen treatment fee; the unlimited spot removal plan is 98,000 yen (tax included). Hydroquinone cream is an additional 2,200 yen. Please check the price list for details, including other treatments.
